Entry Event: Popsicle Freeze
To get the students excited about our new project, we put popsicle outside the classroom in the snow and cold. We observed what the popsicle did throughout the day, writing observations and made drawings as the day went on. It was a learning situation for both the students and the teachers! Only a few popsicles froze, even in the frigid temperatures. As a class, we decided that it was either the coloring in the popsicles that made them not freeze, or the warm air went through the window and kept them warm enough to not freeze. We still have one popsicle taped up on the window, and almost all of the coloring is gone in the popsicle. It has gone from completely frozen to melted then back to being frozen. It has been interesting to observe!
Week 1: SNOW
We learned about how snow forms, and how a snow storm forms. We learned about how to stay safe in cold temperatures as well. We had a special guest, Mr. Stone come in and talk to us about how his business helps the community when it snows. He brought in his plow, and talked about what they lay down on the ground to melt the snow. Another guest, Dr. Johnston, made us a video to inform us on how to keep our loved animals safe in the snow and cold.
Week 2: TORNADOES
During this week, we were able to learn about what happens during a tornado. It was interesting to see what the students thought were the most important ways to stay safe during a tornado. During their literacy task, they wrote a paper about how to stay safe before, during, and after a tornado. They did a great job.
Week 3: THUNDERSTORMS
In our last week of Indiana weather, we learned about thunderstorms. Within thunderstorms, we learned about wind, lighting, and rain. The students learned about the water cycle during the snow week, but we reviewed this during week 3. Something that they didn't know much about was lighting. We talked about how to stay safe when outside and inside if there is lightning. We did an experiment that shows what happens to form a thunderstorm. We also talked about lightning with a cool static experiment! During reading block the students worked hard on a literacy task where they informed people on how to stay safe during a thunderstorm.
Our Project
Project
We are learning about how our Macbooks can enhance our learning! The first week, we learned about how to stay safe on our computers, and how to keep our computers safe. This next week, we will be learning about how to connect globally by talking about social media! Last, we will learn about how the Macbook can help our learning with applications, as well as real world technology!
